SNC Hosting Community Environmental Events Along St. Lawrence River This Summer
South Nation Conservation (SNC) works with community partners to host family-friendly environmental events along local waterways throughout the summer to showcase the local environment and provide cost-effective recreational opportunities for families and visitors.
“It’s All About the River” will take place on Saturday, July 20th, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, along the Morrisburg Waterfront in partnership with the South Dundas Chamber of Commerce and Ontario Power Generation.
The free day outside will feature local exhibitors and vendors including SNC, the St. Lawrence River Institute, Ontario Power Generation, and Carleton University’s Cook Lab of Fish Ecology and Conservation. Free kids fishing will be taking place in the afternoon as well as live music performances from local musicians Isabelle Delage, Cory Coons and Ryan McGillis.
Guy Lauzon, Member of Parliament for Stormont – Dundas – South Glengarry (SDSG), will be presenting local recipients with SDSG Service Awards for outstanding community volunteerism during the event’s opening ceremonies at 12:00 pm.
On Saturday, August 17th, SNC is partnering with the Cardinal Legion to host a non-motorized canoe and kayak poker run along the St. Lawrence River in Cardinal.
The poker run starts at 10:00 am from Windmill Road following a send off featuring the town crier and Fort Wellington Guards and will finish at the Cardinal Legion for lunch. Registration opens at 9:00 am and costs $30.00 per person; children register for free.
“Whether it’s along the South Nation, St. Lawrence or Ottawa River, we work with community partners to help provide great opportunities for residents to get outside and enjoy the local environment,” says John Mesman, SNC’s Communications Lead.
Both events have also received a Community Environmental Grant from SNC. The Community Environmental Grants program supports events and projects within SNC’s jurisdiction that promote recreational use of its rivers, protect the environment or celebrate the area’s natural heritage.
Non-profit groups are encouraged to apply to receive a grant of up to $300 to help offset the costs of their event or activity.
“We’re looking forward to being out in the community and engaging with families throughout our 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario this summer,” added Mesman.
