FLOOD WATCH: OTTAWA RIVER
May 1, 2017
SOUTH NATION JURISDICTION ALONG THE OTTAWA RIVER – South Nation Conservation (SNC) cautions residents in the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet that water levels in the Ottawa River may increase significantly.
Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting approximately 30-60 mm rain for this week which may contribute to high water levels and some localized flooding along the Ottawa River.
The Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board has stated: “Significant rainfall (30 to 60 mm) is forecasted throughout the watershed. Combined with snowmelt runoff in the north, this precipitation is expected to fill most northern reservoirs and cause a sustained increase in water levels and flows on the main stem of the Ottawa River. With current forecasts, levels and flows are expected to rapidly increase from Mattawa down to the Montreal Region, with possible flooding in vulnerable areas”. Water levels are expected to increase rapidly this week and may rise above the minor flooding threshold at Gatineau.
Residents are advised to stay away from watercourses where flows are high and where banks might be unstable, particularly in the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet. Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.
Staff will continue to monitor the water levels and weather forecasts as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program and will provide updates in the event conditions change. The public is encouraged to visit www.nation.on.ca and to also provide feedback with respect to changes in water-related conditions in their local areas. All feedback and photos can be sent to waterwatch@nation.on.ca, posted on our Facebook page (/SouthNationConservation), or Tweeted to us (@SouthNationCA).
