SNC Accepting Tree Orders for Spring 2020
There are many ways for residents to take advantage of subsidies to help plant trees, and South Nation Conservation (SNC) is encouraging interested landowners to contact their office early to help plan their spring planting projects.
SNC will continue to offer a subsidy to landowners in 2020 for 1-acre tree plantings alongside watercourses and farm fields. Tree planting along waterways protects water quality by acting as an organic filter while windbreak planting along farm fields provides wind shelter and protects soil from erosion.
SNC first introduced this tree planting subsidy to landowners last year following the release of its 2018 Forest Conservation Report, which outlined future recommendations to protect local forest cover including the enhancement of its tree planting services.
Property owners with larger open planting areas of at least 1 hectare (2.5 acres) can receive considerable cost savings by purchasing trees from SNC through the 50 Million Tree Program, offered in partnership by SNC and Forest Ontario. The program provides seedlings, planting, and site preparation and tending for a $0.20 fee per tree for conifers and $0.50 fee per tree for deciduous.
Earlier this year, the Government of Canada announced their plans to invest up to $15 million to support Forest Ontario’s vision of planting 50 million trees by 2020. This program was formerly funded and administered by the Province.
Residents can also purchase over-the-counter trees directly from SNC; a minimum of 100 seedlings in multiples of 50 per species can be ordered. Red maple, Balsam fir, and White and Red pine are just some of the many species available. The price per seedling can be as low as $0.58 depending on the species.
Over-the-counter trees are locally sourced and are native stock to Ontario. Orders will be accepted until February 1, 2020. Residents are encouraged to place their orders early as supplies are limited.
SNC has planted over 150,000 trees across its 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario this year in partnership with its member municipalities and area residents.
