FLOOD WATCH: OTTAWA RIVER
SOUTH NATION JURISDICTION ALONG THE OTTAWA RIVER – South Nation Conservation (SNC) cautions residents in the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet that water levels in the Ottawa River remains high and continue to increase significantly.
High precipitation so far in April and ongoing snowmelt from the northern storage reservoirs of the Ottawa River watershed are contributing to high water levels and some localized flooding along the Ottawa River.
The Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board has stated “flows and levels on the main stem of the Ottawa River between Pembroke and the Montreal region continue to be high due to above normal precipitation and snow melt. Levels and flows are expected to continue rising depending on the precipitation received over the next few days. Continued flooding of low-lying areas is expected”. Water levels are above the minor flooding threshold at many locations on this reach of the river and are expected to remain high over the coming week.
Residents are advised to stay away from watercourses where flows are high and where banks might be unstable, particularly in the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet. Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.
SNC staff will continue to monitor the water levels and weather forecasts as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program and will provide updates in the event conditions change.
SNC encourages the public to visit www.nation.on.ca and to also provide feedback with respect to changes in water-related conditions in their local areas. All feedback and photos can be sent to waterwatch@nation.on.ca, posted on our Facebook page (/SouthNationConservation), or Tweeted to us (@SouthNationCA).
