A new four-year federal investment into Ontario’s environment will help increase province-wide forest cover and support local landowner planting initiatives.

On Tuesday, June 5, 2019, the Government of Canada announced their plans to invest up to $15 million to support Forest Ontario’s vision of planting 50 million trees by 2020, following the Ontario Government’s cancellation of funding for the program in April 2019.

“We’re pleased to see the Federal Government step up to support the work of Conservation Authorities and tree planting programs,” says Angela Coleman, SNC’s General Manager/Secretary-Treasurer. “Tree planting programs, championed by local property owners, support forest restoration and contribute to a healthy environment.”

Every spring, SNC partners with Forest Ontario to offer property owners seedlings, planting, and site preparation/tending at a reduced rate. In 2019, 80,700 trees were planted by landowners across SNC’s 4,384 square-km jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario.
