SNC combines with individuals, organizations to replenish trees

It’s that time of year… time to plant trees.

For the past 20 years, South Nation Conservation (SNC) has offered community tree planting services within its jurisdiction. This year, 120,000 trees will be added to the region’s forest cover.

While orders have already been delivered for 2015, there are still some seedlings left to be sold, please contact SNC Forestry Technician Cheyene Ramsey at 877-984-2948, ext. 295 to learn more!

SNC offers property owners and organizations a variety of tree planting subsidies for idle land, stream banks and buffer strips. Over-the-counter sales are also available for smaller orders.

“Depending on planting plans, property owners may be eligible for more than one subsidy,” Ramsey said. “Community and residential tree planting is a great way to help boost local forest cover.”

In a recent organized event, Ramsey noted that 25 scouts planted 1,000 white pine and cedars as a windbreak on land behind the Alfred-Plantagenet municipal building. SNC staff and Mayor Fernand Dicaire were on hand to help.

“The municipality joined with SNC through its applicable tree planting subsidies to cover the costs.”

In addition to community tree plants, many organizations also provide tree giveaways to property owners in select locations. An example occurred April 26 when 52 trees and shrubs were given to Findlay Creek residents. It was part of stewardship activities under the Leitrim Wetland Work Plan, a partnership between SNC, the City of Ottawa, the Findlay Creek Community Association, and Tartan/Tamarack Homes.

Other upcoming events include a May 14 Stream Watch tree planting with students at Russell’s St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School and Embrun’s Ecole elementaire publique de la Riviere Castor; a tree planting with Tagwi District High School students May 20 in Warwick Forest; and a tree give-away for Moose Creek residents  May 23.
