Something Fishy Has Arrived in Rockland!
St. Patrick Catholic School now has its very own Stream of Dreams mural! From October 18 to 20, 2016 each student and teacher learned all about their local watershed and how to keep water clean for people and fish, and then painted the beautiful Dreamfish that now are part of the amazing mural outside their school.
Thanks to funding from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and the Raisin-South Nation Source Protection Region, South Nation Conservation have partnered with the Stream of Dreams Murals Society to create a beautiful mural on the chain-link fence at St. Patrick Catholic School. This mural is the first of many Stream of Dream murals to be installed in the area by SNC, who are now licensed to deliver the program.
“This mural is a wonderful addition to our community and will serve as a reminder not to pollute our water,” said Jean-Marc Lalonde, Ward 1 Councilor, City of Clarence Rockland.
The Stream of Dreams Mural project began after a toxic material was dumped down a storm drain in Burnaby, BC, killing everything in Byrne Creek in 1998. Over 5,000 fish died in that disaster but it inspired local community members to take action and to educate others on the importance of protecting local watersheds.
“Stream of dreams helped me learn the differences between sewers and storm drains. We got to paint our own wooden fish and everyone can see our amazing work of art,” said St. Patrick Catholic School student Alyssa Gauthier.
A bright sign hangs with this stunning mural to remind the community that the purpose of this project is to inspire everyone to protect and conserve water to ensure a healthy future for our rivers, lakes, oceans and communities. To find out more about Stream of Dreams visit www.streamofdreams.org.
